*koff koff* Run/Vault wip: Blocking *koff*

I was planning to work intently on this, this past President’s Day weekend, but I caught a pretty bad coughing bug. Since I can’t seem to sleep due to my coughing, I decided to post this really quick.

I based this off of the sketches I drew a little ways ago, along with some reference for the ‘kong vault’ I’ve found on Youtube. I’m still not sold on the first section of the blocking; his poses don’t look so strong for doing that preemptive hop before leaping. Also, does the overall animation look too slow?

Once I recover, I hope to get back to animating and give this the attention it deserves.

  1. Nice!

I think the poses are fine for the most part in the first section. Maybe the arms on frame 218 is a little much? Or perhaps its his right arm that doesn’t feel like it flows well into frame 218? It looks like the arm should keep swinging forward, but it bounces right back up. I dunno. Transitioning from run to jump is tricky. :\

    I like the airborn part.

Landing looks good. Try an elbow bend on his right arm between frames 264 and 274 … just to lag/drag the forearm a bit.

I notice Asher hardly bends his elbows … what’s up with that? Does he not enjoy elbow bending?

My first impression is that the overall animation feels slow. As soon as he enters stepped keys mode, it looks like he starts chugging. I might get a better sense when its all smoothed out.

You better have recovered by now! It’s been a week! (…and sorry for super late crit =__=)

  2. 235-240 seems like his feet got magically higher? I can’t put my finger on what seems a little strange about this part. I only catch it when I’m looking through the animation slowly, not when I just let it play.

Maybe make his impact a little harder? He’s essentially dropping a distance of his height (not sure how tall he is). I know when I jump off a 5 foot ledge, it’s pretty rough on the knees and knocks the breath out of me for a sec. Maybe the slightest pause after landing?

I agree w/ Hongman about the pacing. It slows down as he approaches the box- don’t know if this is because this is a WIP.

    Looking good.

  3. Hey guys, thanks for the crits. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one thinking it chugs.

Hongman: Asher hates elbows, period. He got mad when I told him I wanted to bend them more. Seriously, tho, thanks for your expert opinions. Words from my mentor are always appreciated. 🙂

Dana: The height thing for the feet is mostly for the rig to clear the box. I had to exaggerate it a bit because his model has very long legs/stubby arms.

About the landing, that is the roughest part, hehe. That’s laziness on my part. I want to redo it so he stumbles steps when he lands. (But you probably know this already because I told you about it earlier.)
